Papers of Alfred Dickinson Barksdale [manuscript], 1893-1940.

The collection consists chiefly of Barksdale's personal and professional correspondence. Letters from family members particularly his father William Randolph Barksdale discuss local news and politics in Halifax County, Va., during World War I. Letters from several young women with whom Barksdale corresponded including a resident of Mauritius, an aspiring actress, a medical student, and a music teacher discuss their lives, ambitions, travels and war work. Barksdale's papers as an attorney in Lynchburg, Va., chiefly concern civil suits, including two involving Piedmont Business College. A file of military papers contains copies of messages, orders and rosters involving Co. M, 116th infantry, 29th Division of the American Expeditionary Forces during the Meuse Argonne offensive as well as post war correspondence regarding compensation for an injury and notes concerning the shooting of a soldier by Major Hierome Opie of Staunton, Va. There are a few papers regarding the gubernatorial candidacy of Henry St. George Tucker in 1921; some minutes and reports from Hollins College, 1939; scattered financial papers; postcards and souvenirs from France; and photographs. Correspondents include Harry F. Byrd, M.J. Menefee, Mary Koutouzov Tolstoy and Harry St. George Tucker.
